Explain Like I'm in the Band

A grayscale operator selects the Garage-Band Version voice file in a digital server space; the selected file, hand control, and a few road lights glow cyan.

When an AI explanation is hard to follow, you can simply ask for an easier one. A familiar comparison or a little humor can be part of that request, too.

I ran into this while tired and about to go to bed. I couldn't follow what the AI was telling me about the development work, so I asked it to explain it like I was five. I wanted to understand how serious it was without learning a whole new skill that night.

You don't need an elaborate prompt just to get your bearings. Start with one question:

Plain-language version

Can you explain this in plain language so I can get my bearings?

[Paste what you need explained.]

You can also choose the voice. When we started discussing variations, I thought of the Lone Rangers from Airheads. Someone who understands music better than technology seemed like a fun place to start.

The garage-band version

Explain this to me like we're in a garage band and I understand music better than technology. Use simple band analogies and keep the facts straight.

[Paste what you need explained.]

For a different personality, try a little Rodney Dangerfield-inspired self-deprecation.

The stand-up version

Explain this in plain language with Rodney Dangerfield-style self-deprecating humor. Make yourself the butt of the jokes, and keep the explanation clear and accurate.

[Paste what you need explained.]
A woman with a guitar resting across her lap points to a passage on a laptop while composing the follow-up question, How does this fit?

These are variations to try. Choose a voice you enjoy, or stay with plain language. If an analogy leaves you confused, ask how it connects to the actual problem. You can ask for more detail once you know which part you want to understand.
